February 2, 2017 | By admin

It’s February and Valentine’s Day is approaching, but more importantly, this month is American Heart Month. This month we celebrate the most beloved organ in our body and acknowledge how much our heart works for us. We’ve always lived by the saying, “a happy life is having a healthy life,” and a factor to living it is having a healthy heart. Let’s show our hearts some love today and everyday as we grow older. As we age, we need to find ways to stay active. And as seniors, we need to find ways to be proactive without risking getting injured in the process. Here are things we can do to keep a healthy heart. Snack simply and sweet Instead of reaching out for your favorite candy bar or chocolate desert, try these fruits that are full of awesome antioxidants Blueberries, strawberries, oranges, red grapes, cherries, and plums are some foods you can easily find in your local farmer’s market or grocery store. Prunes and raisins are also wonderful foods filled with antioxidants. Dance the night (or day) away! Find yourself a dance partner and sway to the beat. It doesn’t have to be an intricate dance routine. As long as you are moving, you are taking a step toward a healthier heart. Any kind of movement, big or small, helps to increase blood circulation in the body, reduce stress, strengthen and protect the heart. Aim for a healthy weight Seniors who are overweight don’t necessarily need to do extreme diets and exercise to lose weight. Take small steps to improve daily nutrition and strength through exercise. Losing as little as five to ten pounds can make a positive impact and lower the risk of heart problems. Aiming for a healthy weight overall increase positive health, especially to our hearts. Talk to your doctor One of our biggest health advocate is your doctor. Keep them in the loop with any dietary changes and increase of activity through exercise. They will guide you throughout your healthy heart journey. Let’s live and love for years to come by helping our hearts stay strong by living a happy, healthy lifestyle.
